The City of Billings is recruiting Probationary Firefighters to respond to alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property depending on the nature of the emergency, provide basic life support, perform extraction and rescue, perform fire suppression and prevention activities. To participate in fire prevention programs and inspections, station and apparatus maintenance, and training activities.
Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) results must be attached to your application and must be dated within one year of the date of your City of Billings job application.
Salary Range: $24.8770 - $34.5590 per hour. Salary at hiring will be $24.8770 per hour and tops out at $34.5590 per hour as a firefighter. Salary increases with promotions to Engineer and Captain.
Work Schedule
- During Recruit Academy: Four (4) 10-hour days. Days off TBD.
- After Recruit Academy: 27-day total work cycle consisting of 7 consecutive work shifts of 24-hours on duty and 48-hours off duty, immediately followed by 6 consecutive days off.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Respond to alarms and assist in the suppression of fires including rescue, entry, ventilation, and salvage work.
- Lay and connect hose.
- Maintain pumping apparatus.
- Hold nozzles and direct water streams.
- Raise and climb ladders.
- Ventilate burning structures.
- Enter building to evaluate occupants.
- Operate all types of portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, emergency medical equipment and other rescue equipment.
- Respond to emergency medical incidents.
- Analyze patient needs and administer first aid until relieved by proper medical personnel.
- Apply techniques for the control of bleeding.
- Utilize immobilization techniques to stabilize patient.
- Perform cleaning, salvage, and overhaul work following fire.
- Prepare apparatus and equipment for further alarms.
- Respond to hazardous material incidents.
- Control scene.
- Participate in the performance of investigations.
- Preserve evidence.
- Secure fire scene.
- Drive and operate equipment under limited conditions.
- Participate in periodic testing of pumps, ladders, and other apparatus and equipment.
- Performs equipment checks prior to emergencies.
- Participate in fire drills.
- Attend continuing and advanced training sessions which include firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of all equipment and related tools.
- Perform home and commercial inspections for fire prevention and pre-fire planning.
- Check occupancy loads and fire lane violations.
- Assist in training new employees in routines of fire suppression, equipment operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct station tours.
- Maintain a variety of records.
- Assist in maintaining fire equipment, station, and grounds.
- Operate radio equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Probationary Fire Fighter Required Qualifications & Skills
- High school diploma.
- Up to one (1) year of combined education and experience in the areas of fire suppression & prevention.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and nicotine test, psychological examination, physical examination, and a Federal and State finger-print criminal background check.
- Must possess State of Montana EMT Basic certification or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- National Registry EMT Basic certification.
- Must maintain the minimum Montana and National Register EMT Basic level certification throughout Billing Fire Department career.
- Must have good interpersonal skills.
Probationary Fire Fighter Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Associate's degree in Fire Science or equivalent.
Fire Fighter Required Qualifications & Skills
- Qualifications include successful completion of probationary period.
Fire Fighter I Required Qualifications & Skills
- Qualifications include 18 months of satisfactory service as a Fire Figh er. Completion of NFPA standards for Fire Fighter I.
Fire Fighter II Required Qualifications & Skills
- Qualifications include 30 months of satisfactory service as a Fire Fighter I. Completion of NFPA standards for a Fire Fighter II.
Additional Qualifications & Skills for Fire Fighter through Fire Fighter II.
- Must maintain the minimum Montana and National Register EMT Basic level certification throughout Billing Fire Department career.
